Soultown Pizza

She scrawls an English proverb on the back of my check
Sketches her recent history and why she came back
She has a friend in Parchman, counting the days
He’s making license plates and mending his ways
She works in Soultown Pizza, just off the Square
Puts no faith in the law, finds no solace in prayer
She draws upon her Lucky, tells me what she thinks
No frat boy gets close enough to spike her drink

She says, right now, there’s a time
And right now there’s a place
And right now they exist for the guilty to save face
And right now, there’s a right
And right now, there’s a wrong
And you really must believe
That the weak protect the strong
You can hide in the shadows
Pretend to pretend
But you need to pay attention
‘Cos there’s some things you can’t mend

She wants to change the world, but it’s putting up a fight
And if the future’s Technicolor, then the past is black and white
And I’m way out of my depth, I have to confess
Because I’m playing checkers, and she’s playing chess
There’s bluegrass on the jukebox, peanut shells on the floor
Cover’s only ten and she’s dancing in the door
Way down in the delta, it’s feeling like a dream
The storm before the calm then we’re drifting on upstream

She’s says, right now, listening, don’t remotely mean you care
Right now, your presence, won’t even take you there
And if your eyes are open
It don’t make you awake
And you’ll never doubt again
That reality is fake
‘cos whatever it is you’re selling
I’ll tell you I don’t need
And whatever you deem to call it
It’s good old-fashioned greed

She says, right now there’s a night
That seems to last forever
There’s no scramble for the light
Just fleeing to the river
And right now, there’s a blade
And it’s pressed against your neck
And however far you wade
There’ll be no turning back
